Things to Do in Port Orchard, WA: The Complete Local Guide

Port Orchard is the Kitsap County seat — a small waterfront city on the south shore of Sinclair Inlet, directly across from Bremerton. It has a charming historic downtown, a working waterfront, and a slower pace than the rest of the county. If you're looking for a low-key afternoon with good food, antique shopping, and water views without the crowds, Port Orchard delivers.

Getting to Port Orchard

From Bremerton: The passenger-only Foot Ferry connects Bremerton's waterfront to Port Orchard's downtown dock in about 10 minutes. It runs frequently throughout the day and is the most pleasant way to arrive. Check Kitsap Transit's schedule for current times.

By Car: From Bremerton, take SR-16 south and cross the Warren Avenue Bridge (about 10 minutes). From Silverdale, take SR-16 south (about 15 minutes). From Tacoma, take SR-16 north through the Narrows and continue into Kitsap County (about 30-40 minutes depending on traffic).

Downtown Port Orchard Waterfront

Port Orchard's downtown centers on Bay Street, which runs along Sinclair Inlet with views across to the Bremerton waterfront and shipyard.

Port Orchard Waterfront A boardwalk and dock area with benches, views of Sinclair Inlet, and the ferry dock for the Bremerton foot ferry. Casual and unhurried — a good place to sit with coffee and watch the water.

Bay Street Shops Bay Street has an excellent concentration of antique stores — more per block than anywhere else in Kitsap County. If you're into antiques, Port Orchard's downtown is a genuine find. Several multi-dealer antique malls and independent shops line the main street.

Port Orchard Farmers Market Saturdays, May through October, at the Port Orchard waterfront. One of the county's longest-running farmers markets. Local produce, crafts, food vendors. A good anchor for a Saturday morning visit.

Museums & History

Kitsap County Historical Society Museum (Bremerton, nearby) The county's primary history museum is technically in Bremerton (10 minutes by car or ferry), but it's the best resource for Port Orchard and South Kitsap history. Covers everything from the Suquamish people to the Navy's arrival to modern development.

Port Orchard's Historic Downtown Port Orchard has several buildings on the National Register of Historic Places. The 1914 Post Office building and the Sidney Art Gallery building are particularly notable. A self-guided walking tour pamphlet is available at the city visitor center.

Sidney Museum & Arts Association A community gallery and small museum in the historic Sidney Building on Bay Street. Rotating exhibitions from local artists plus a permanent collection focused on South Kitsap history. Free admission.

Day Trip Tips

Best time to visit: May through September for farmers market and waterfront events. The antique shops and restaurants are open year-round.

Parking: Free parking in city lots along Bay Street and at the marina. No parking stress.

Combine with: Port Orchard and Bremerton are naturally paired — take the foot ferry across and explore both waterfronts in one day. Silverdale (15 min north) adds retail and more dining options.

Hidden gem: The antique stores on Bay Street are legitimately one of the best concentration of antique dealers in the entire South Sound. If that's your thing, plan extra time.
